Midterm Madness: Skincare 101

It’s midterms. Here’s an equation for you: all nighters plus oven-ready pizza for dinner (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday) multiplied by stress to the third power equals what?

Answer Key: dull, irritated and tired skin.

But that doesn’t have to be the case. A major key to great skin (aside from winning the flawless skin genetics lottery) is a consistent and effective skincare routine for both morning and night. Incorporating a skincare routine into your daily routine is so necessary because it not only cleanses and replenishes your skin, it cleanses and replenishes your soul. Okay, it’s not that deep, but I do consider my skincare routine to be an important act of self-care especially during stressful times.

In building my skincare routine, Target has always been my first stop for a wide range of affordable and effective skincare products. You can find everything you need to build a basic 5-step routine. Here’s an effective and simple routine you can follow using products found at your local Target:

Step 1: Oil Cleanser

I know what you’re thinking: “Oil? On my face?” Oil cleansers have become one of the rising stars of skincare. It’s step one of the double-cleansing method, originated in South Korea, the most effective and thorough method of cleansing your skin. When you gently massage the oil cleanser into dry skin it melts away stubborn makeup without tugging at sensitive skin and causing wrinkles. It also gets deep into your pores and clears out the gunk and debris of the day. Then, you just rinse it all away. Goodbye, gunk and debris!

Step 2: Foam Cleanser

Step two in the Korean double-cleansing method is a foam or water-based cleanser. After the oil cleanser has cleaned deep into your pores, the foam cleanser is there to make sure all the gunk is gone and give you that squeaky, fresh feeling. You can now rest assured that your skin is 100 percent clean! Target offers a lot of great cleansers so it was hard picking my favorites.

Step 3: Toner

So what does toner do? Toners help balance the pH in your skin after all that cleansing. Toners also prepare your skin for the next steps of your skincare routine, creating the perfect canvas for better absorption of the products to follow. Finding the right toner can really change your skin, so don’t underestimate it. I would recommend finding a toner with a low pH and gentle ingredients, that doesn’t strip or irritate your skin.

Step 4: Serum/Essence

Serums follow toner and are designed to target a specific skin need. Whether you’re dealing with dullness, dryness, dark spots, or fine lines, there’s a serum for it. Serums are the extra boost your skin needs to bring out the inner glow.

Step 5: Moisturizer

Moisturizer is my favorite part of my skincare routine, mainly because it means I’m pretty much done, but also it just feels good to have soft, moisturized skin. I especially like thick moisturizers at night so I wake with hydrated, baby soft skin, and during the day I opt for a lighter moisturizer, so my skin isn’t suffocated.

Bonus Step: Sunscreen

As a black girl, I’m well aware of the term, “Black don’t crack,”. (Which is kind of true!) However, black, white, Asian, Hispanic, we all need sunscreen. Everyday. I mean it, even on the foggy days. Everyday. It mean seem like a bit much, but if you really care about maintaining youthful skin for the glorious years to come and preventing the harmful effects of U.V ray damage, take my advice and add sunscreen to your morning skincare routine.
